Grotbags

I am never one to be star struck by people.

The only people I’ve ever wanted to meet in my life, were the two actors that played Skeletor and Evil Lyn in the He-man movie.

And Carol Lee Scott. Most people today would have no idea who she even is, but to anyone who was a child between 1984 and 1993, would fondly remember her as Grotbags, the temperamental, green permed witch, who was always at the door, waiting to hate on children everywhere and remind them all that they are ‘stinking, sniveling little brats.’

She also had two very camp cronies, aptly named ‘Croc’ and ‘Robot Redford’. Both would often be flouncing around in pinafores and constantly screaming their heads off as Grotbags beat them with her Bedazzler. A large gold wand with a pointed finger on the end of it. Watching back clips of Carol Lee Scott these last few days, I remembered just how brilliant she was, and that subconsciously, I owe the my fondness for the darker side of camp comedy all to her…

I truly believed that one day, I would be able to track down the lady that played Grotbags and thank her personally for making such an impact on my childhood. With Darren Scott, the lovely former editor of Gay Times, we would often come up with new ways to stalk, or track her down, just so we could find and tell her just how important she was to us personally, but also to the 80s kid gay…
